Nothing...Oh wait

Last weakend I re-arranged the furniture in my lounge room and bought a coffee table and another bookcase. It looks a lot nicer now. Pity the walls are still pink (peach apparently). Theres more room for entertaining now (sif I ever do that).

Anyways, Im thinking that I'm gonna have a house warming in August (when i've been in 1 year lolf). Coz I never had one when I moved in coz I had no money and was busy. It took me almost a month to sort out all the boxes anyway.

My vision for the backyard. Problem with paving is all the sand that you need. Plus an area like that would have to be hoarded and pegged. bah. I will put it off till I have saved some more money again. 1000k's till my next car service too. yuk.

Been watching this (new?) sci-fi series called Firefly (not the SBS documentary fireflies!). It's like, a space thingie like all others, but it is done like a western. It's pretty ace so far but i've only seen 3 eps and there aren't many sources on the mule to download the rest (about 7). So it usually takes me 4 or so days to get an episode. sux. I think i've finally got the tuning right on the mule to get my 32 gig a month. I go 5up20down during the day and 10up40down at night. I never manage to use up all my off peak quota tho. Perhaps I should find some torrents to download during that time.

My $deity, that man is insane, viz:

[10:29] (Sensei-GR): I think n association formed to identify cnuts who drink abnormal large amounts of water and suck on b aby dummies or lollypops
[10:29] (Sensei-GR): Then we can lock them up for compulsory treatment
[10:32] (Sensei-GR): The withdrawal symptoms from sucking baby dummies is terrifying
[10:32] (Sensei-GR): The cnuts bang their headsa against the wall and become uber violent

Meanwhile

1) Got the quote from $company re webcasting, yay. Now I can move ahead with the proposal.
2) Went home for compulsary long-weekend-visit-the-parental-units and ended up fencing again (not en guarde, touche etc, I mean digging holes with a crowbar). Yay me.
3) My impatiens have just about had it, time for some bulbs (tulips anyone?)
4) YAY my Salix (willow) is shooting. w00t w00t.
5) I have too many tomatoes to eat. They give me the shits (literally).
6) I ate too many grapes again. why do i keep doing this to myself?
7) So much for the diet, I had KFC last night waaaaa
8) I am actually tanning when I go outside now. It's as if I have reduced my burn threshold. Next summer is gonna be ACE
9) Parental units gave me this super-retro style radiator for the bafroom to stop my balls retracting in the morning. I just have to find some suitable battens or studs to mount it (where is a noggin when you need one). tap tap tap tap tap tap clonk etc
10) I am feeling guilty as hell that I'm becoming close to this other guy who is not Ty. waaah etc
11) God I hope Ty doesn't read this
12) Same as 11
13) Everyone keeps wanting to give me gold cards (amex visa etc) which is odd coz they hardly make any money out of me (i don't accrue any interest usually) and a gold card would reduce their income more coz theres no annual fee. CC co's are weird
14) Nearly got enuff saved to get my front struts replaced
15) Got the oil for the gearbox but everywhere had sold out of the transmission filters. Autobarn said that you could only get genuine Mitsubishi ones, Mitsubishi had run out, Repco said they sold their last clone one yesterday, Colemans said that it will take a week to get one in. Meh, I'll do it at easter.
16) There is no 16

Ok this saga has been going on too long. It is now Monday the 1st of March 2004 (my watch sez it's Monday the 2nd March coz it doesn't handle leap years).

Reading down is chronological order. The important thing to look at is the dates.

Hi Lachlan,

My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. In brief, we can certainly assist with setting up a completely self managed webcasting system. For a low end solution you may be looking at around the $10,000 to $15,000 mark, however if the Crematorium is after something along the lines of what the WA chapels are doing, you would be looking at solution cost of around $25,000 to $30,000. This would include cameras, encoders, servers etc. There may be some development costs over and above that, but I would not think it would be a great deal more.

If you would like some detailed costs put together then let me know and I'd be happy to prepare a document for you.
Regards

Thank you for your response. Management has asked for more detail before they make a decision. Here is what we have:
There are 3 chapels (all wings of the one building). We currently have 2 cameras installed in each that go through a programmable controller to be recorded on VHS and the audio only to cassette. However, the cameras are adjusted in a way that the the field of view is large (picture attached), which I believe may be unsuitable for web casting as the frame size is typically small.

We currently have an excellent audio system installed in the chapels and the company who installed it advised that it is easy for them to provide a line level feed of the microphone and music mixed, as well as the composite video feed from the cameras in each chapel to the comms room in the chapel building (i.e. 3xvideo, 3xaudio total). The funeral directors are trained to use the touch screen based control application for the services (such as microphone levels, controlling the CD players etc).

We currently have a 1Mb/1Mb (megabit each way microwave) internet link which may not be suficient for webcasting. We have option to expand that to 2Mb each way before having to seek alternate technology (ie fibre).

All our buildings (ie the chapel building and the main office where the servers reside) are linked by fibre (100bFX network). We currently use a mix of Red hat Linux (apache 1.3) and Windows Server 2003 (IIS 6) web servers. We have 2 public IP addresses.

Kind Regards,

---

Hi Lachlan,

My apologies for the delay. We have been exceptionally busy (and my wife decided to have a baby!). So I've been a bit snowed under to say the least. I have put together some detailed costs however, I need to go through it with our tech. director. I'll aim to have something completed before week's end.

Hi Sean,
I'm getting a bit anxious at this end. If I don't get the proposal in to management soon I'm going to lose control of the project. I understand that you have been busy (both professionally and personally). Please advise.

Regards,
Lach Follett

Hi Lachlan,

I'm actually sitting down with our tech director early this afternoon to go through final costs. Will have it together for you by tomorrow AM.

Today is the 1st March and I still have nothing.

Problem is this is the only company I can find that has an office in Melbourne and can do this kind of work. So I can't make idle threats etc. Gah.

Speaking of lame excuses,

"Lachlan, Sorry I dropped the ball on that one. My mother-in-law passed away last week, please accept my apologies for not getting back to you."

LOLF. Oh well I suppose it might be true.

EDIT: The last excuse was from a different company

Crap. Bad sectors on the Warez drive on the server. Why can't I ever get bad sectors on the Raid-5 array (that can handle it fine)? So that means I was down all yesterday. No warez for mee. I've repaired the drive (too 4 hours) but usually once you get a few sectors going french, the rest follow soon.

Went out Sat night to a BBQ at a mate's apartment in the city. Started raining a bit so we went inside and listened to 'Dark side of the moon'. Yay. Was driving so couldn't get blotto.

Went out Sun night to a meat at a pub in Fitzroy. Chatted and stuff. Went home. Was driving so couldn't get blotto.

Put in to get Friday off (I have 26 days annual leave available). That will make it a 4 day weekend which should be nice. I can go visit my parents and come back Sun night (ergo avoiding the traffic) and still have a day of rest.

Planning to change the gearbox oil this weekend (Dad has all the stuff I need except oil and filter). I'll see if that helps the roughness of the gearbox. I noticed last time I checked that it was overful of oil (like over the hot mark even when cold) which could be the problem (I hope it is). Auto gearboxes are touchy about oil level. Then again, apparently overfilling a gearbox is a trick used car salesmen use to cover any major problems. Bastards.
